Cole was gone thirty minutes when Gabe’s phone rang. Unknown caller. He frowned and answered the call. “Hello?”

“Is this Gabe?” A man’s voice, deep and smooth.

“Yes? Who’s this?”

“I’m a bartender at the House of Asmodeus club.”

House of Asmodeus. Gabe had heard about the decadent club opening recently in one of the seedier districts of the city. Out of pure curiosity—or so they told each other—he and Cole were planning to visit the club to see if it was the den of iniquity it was rumored to be.

“Okay…” Gabe said. “And?” How had the guy gotten his number?

“There’s a man here who says he’s your husband, I got your number from his phone.”

“Cole?” Gabe tensed. “Cole is there? Let me talk to him.”

“Well…” the bartender hesitated. “I would, but he’s pretty messed up, barely coherent.”

“What’re you talking about?” Gabe breathed, fear needling his heart.

“He’s been mixing whiskey shots with… speedballs.”

Gabe shook his head. “No,” he said tightly. “Cole has never done speedballs. He doesn’t do drugs. Fuck, he barely drinks whiskey.”

“I don’t know what to tell you,” The bartender replied. “But you should get down here, he’s pretty fucked up.”

Shit. “Okay. Just keep him there. Don’t let him leave. Don’t let him drive. I’m on my way.”

“Come through the rear entrance of the club,” the man said. “I cut your husband off and moved him to a back room where he could lie down.”

“Thank you,” Gabe rasped. “I’ll be right there.”

Fuck-fuck-fuck! What the hell was happening?

“Who was that?” Max asked with concern. “What was that about Cole doing speedballs?”

“It was the bartender from…” Gabe swallowed thickly and stuffed his phone in his pocket, his hands shaking. “… from that new club, the House of Asmodeus. He said Cole was there, downing whiskey with speedballs. He… he said he was really fucked up.”

“Anyone who took whiskey with speedballs would be fucked up,” Max murmured. “But that doesn’t sound like Cole. As far as I know, he’s never done drugs.”

“He hasn’t.” He shook his head, feeling sick. He made another call.

“Who are you calling?”

“Cole.” The call went straight to voicemail. “Shit. He must’ve turned his phone off, or the battery died.” Gabe stood numbly, staring at the cell, then sent one more call. “Riley? Have you seen Cole this evening? He said you messaged him.”

“No… I didn’t message him. I haven’t seen him at all tonight. Is everything okay?”

“I’ll get back to you on that,” Gabe mumbled and ended the call. His chest tightened with anxiety. “Cole lied about who sent the text,” he whispered hollowly. “It wasn’t Riley. He hasn’t seen Cole tonight.” What the fuck? “I… I have to get down to the Asmodeus club and find out what the hell is going on.”

“Yeah, of course. Just make sure he’s okay, then we can figure out the rest.”

Gabe nodded. “Call me immediately if you hear from Maddy.”

“I will. And you let me know what’s going on with Cole when you get to the club.”

“Yeah, I will.” Gabe headed for the door, his skull throbbing.
